Empowering Youths in Kakamega County to Combat Gender-Based Violence
The Network for Research and Governance (NRG), in partnership with Transparency International Kenya, has made significant strides in addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Kakamega County. Through collaborative efforts, the two organizations have implemented targeted programs to empower communities, focusing on youth and marginalized groups, with knowledge and resources to access justice.
Legal Aid Clinics
Together, NRG and Transparency International Kenya conducted legal aid clinics in three sub-counties across Kakamega. These clinics served as a platform for education, dialogue, and action. A total of 180 youths were equipped with vital legal knowledge on GBV, including understanding their rights, how to report cases, and accessing available legal frameworks for support.
Justice in Action: A Measurable Impact
During the clinics, two critical GBV cases were identified, documented, and escalated to court. These cases, now in the judicial system, represent a breakthrough in accessing justice for survivors who were previously denied support. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the partnership in bridging the gap between community needs and legal interventions.
Empowering Youth: Champions of Change
The training has empowered the 180 youths to become champions of change in their communities. These young leaders are now actively raising awareness, challenging harmful norms, and advocating for justice for GBV survivors. Their grassroots efforts have sparked conversations and fostered resilience within their localities, ensuring a sustained impact long after the clinics concluded.
This success story is a testament to the transformative potential of strategic partnerships and community empowerment in the fight against GBV. Together, we are building safer, more equitable communities in Kakamega County.
